Tips on selection a Detroit Baker continued.

Cakes Our Specialty by Paula

  1. Will my baker make my wedding cake if I have another baker make additional cakes for the kitchen?  Generally no, when your guest ask who made your cake, the baker should get credit not only for the look of the cake but also for the taste of the cake.  If you serve another baker's cake to your guests it will give a false review of the baker to your guests.

  2. Do I need cake for all my guests?  It all depends if you are serving your wedding cake for desert, adding it to a dessert table or sending it home for your guests to enjoy at home.  The number needs to be close; it's most embarrassing for the last two tables of guest not to receive a slice of cake.

  3. Is the Faux cake more economical to go with?  No, however it all depends on the number of guests you will be serving.  You will still have to pay for the faux cake, which will take the same amount of icing and the same amount of time to design as a real wedding cake.  Plus, you will have to buy cake to feed your guests.

  4. When do I need to book my baker?  Your baker has a limit in the amount of cakes they can make in a day or weekend.  Book your date before it is taken by another couple.  Not always do you have to pick a cake or style, design, flavor or filling at this time.

  5. What if I do not know the style of wedding cake I want?  Looking over the baker's portfolio will give an idea of the style/styles that interest you.  At that point you will be able to go over how many tiers you will need to serve your guests, the decorating designs you may like, if you would like fresh flowers on your cake, do you want your cake stacked or sliced, etc.

  6. Do I need to taste the cake, icing and the filling of my wedding cake?  Yes, you will need to determine if you are pleased with the taste, texture and sweetness of the cake before you place your order.  You do not want any surprises when you serve your wedding cake to your guests the night of your wedding reception.

  7. What if I do not like cake?  Your guest have been invited to your wedding to celebrate with you and they look forward to the traditions that go along with a wedding.  They will look forward to viewing your wedding cake and tasting it.  Have a friend or relative taste the cake sample and give you their opinion.

  8. When do I have to finalize on my wedding cake?  Two to three weeks prior to the wedding.  This will give the baker time to get all the supplies needed to produce your special designed wedding cake.

  9. Will I need to return cake parts to the Baker after my wedding?  Most bakers will charge a security deposit on wedding cake parts used in production of your wedding cake.  This deposit will be returned to you when the cake parts are returned within a reasonable length of time.  If cake parts do not need to be returned, you have either paid for them or they are included in the cost of the wedding cake.

  10. Is there a delivery and set up fee?  Most bakers will charge a fee depending on the location of the wedding reception venue, the time frame allowed for them to set up the cake and if they are putting flowers on the cake.
