Tips on selection a Detroit Baker

Cakes Our Specialty by Paula

Beauty, Taste and Presentation of your wedding cake are the three things to look for when designing your wedding cake.  Not only does it have to look good, it has to taste good and it has to present itself well when cut and served on a dessert plate or in a cake box.

  1. Does experience matter when selecting a baker?  An experience baker will have the knowledge in the designing of your wedding cake, in the products that they use to produce your wedding cake, in the supporting of the tiers in your wedding cake and the safest way to transport your wedding cake to your venue.

  2. Will the person you interview with be the one designing, baking and delivering your wedding cake?  If your contract is passed from the clerk who takes your order, to the baker who will make your cake, to the decorator who will design the cake, to the delivery person who sets up your cake, the end result may not be what you perceived as your dream wedding cake.

  3. Is a Baker working from a shop in their home less expensive than a Bakery?  Not necessarily.  It will depend on the quality of the products used and the time spent in designing of your wedding cake.

  4. If I bring a cake picturer to my Baker, how do I know they can duplicate it?  First of all you will want to see pictures of the decorator's actual work, not from a magazine.  Ask them to show you cakes that they have made that resemble parts of the cake you like.  If you do not see examples of the design, ask the designer to make you a sample to show that it can be done.
  5. How is a wedding cake priced?  Wedding cakes are sold by the serving or the slice of cake.  Determining how many slices you will need depends on how many guests you are having at your wedding reception.  It also depends on whether you are serving it for dessert or sending it home with your guests.

  6. What is the size of a slice of wedding cake?  The standard size listed in most wedding cake books is 1" by 2" by the height of the cake; however not all bakers go by this size; make sure you ask the size when quoted a price.  At times your caterer may slice them thinner and longer, depending on the size of the dessert plate.

  7. How can I save money on my wedding cake?  The most economical way to save money is by having a smaller wedding cake on display and additional servings of cake in the kitchen.  Make sure the cake in the kitchen is the same size slice that is coming from the wedding cake itself; your guests will not know that it wasn't a slice from the actual wedding cake.
